Welcome to First Church Stratford

No matter who you are and where you are on life’s journey,
you are welcome here! We are thrilled to welcome you to our services,
either in the sanctuary or via Zoom or Facebook Live.

A Few Fast Facts

Gathering Together Since 1639

In the spring of 1639, a group of intrepid travelers, led by Reverend Adam Blakeman, landed at Mac’s Harbor. To the right of the harbor stood First Church Stratford’s first meeting house, built in 1641. Many of the colonial silver pieces used during those early gatherings are now in the Yale University Art Gallery.

Historic House of Worship

First Church Stratford’s current house of worship is the church’s fifth building over its 382 year history. The church building, which was designed by Leopold Eidlitz, opened in 1859.

Rose Window

First Church Stratford is known for its octagonal rose window. The window contains a total of 25 elements: one central circle; 12 radiating arms; and 12 flowers. The background color of the window is blue, with red, green, yellow and white interspersed through the design.

Open and Affirming

We welcome the total identity of each person, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical, mental or emotional challenges, ethnicity, education, or economic circumstance. Read our ONA statement here.

What to Expect

What Should I Wear?

During any service, you’ll find people wearing a variety of clothing, from more formal business attire to jeans. You should wear what you feel comfortable wearing. We care about you, not your clothes! Some of our Zoom participants even wear pajamas!

What Do I Do During A Service?

Join in as much as you would like or just sit and observe. No one will call upon you to participate. Our 10:00 AM service follows a printed order of worship that will guide you through the service.

What If I Have Special Needs?

Our sanctuary is wheelchair accessible via a ramp located on the Church Street side of the building. Upper and Lower Packard Halls can be accessed using our elevator. Some of our pews have been altered to accommodate wheelchairs.

We have both large print bibles and large print weekly orders of service for those with visual impairments. We have audio enhancement for those with hearing impairments. In all cases, our ushers and deacons will make every effort to provide a comfortable service environment for those with special needs.

Is Childcare Provided?

During our 10 AM service, we offer child care for those under the age of 2 in our Crib and Toddler Room (temporarily suspended during COVID). There are Christian Education programs for all children through 8th grade during the school year.

What Do I Do After Church?

After the Sunday 10:00 AM service, we have a time of fellowship, our Coffee Hour, in Upper Packard Hall (out the door to the right of the altar and up the stairs). Please join us!

How Can I Join?

Becoming a member of First Church Stratford is a simple process. Just express your desire to join to our minister or one of our deacons on duty. Currently, we conduct new member orientation once per year. This orientation session is the easiest way to learn about our church, our beliefs and the United Church of Christ.
